REALITY CHECK

We hope you all have had the time to breathe out the post-election sigh of relief. While we at OVERTONES were disappointed to see that Proposition 8 passed in California, we are confident and hopeful that it will get overturned and equality for all will be a way of life in our state, and the world. And, needless to say, a landslide Obama win was an incredible moment to behold. In an effort of making that moment last, we are back to work and invite you to stop by the gallery and see our new exhibit "Reality Check"--it's more than just food for thought; it's an inspiration and a call to action. We hope you'll join in!

See you at the gallery.

"REALITY CHECK" opening SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1st; 7-10pm

Join us this Saturday, November 1st, from 7-10pm for the opening of our group exhibition "Reality Check". Developed as a response to the current political situation, "Reality Check" presents works by some of the most prolific political artists in America today: SUE COE, ROBBIE CONAL, SHEPARD FAIREY, SANDRA LOW, JOHN OUTTERBRIDGE, WALTER ROBINSON, TRAVIS SOMERVILLE and JEFFREY VALLANCE.
We hope you will join us in celebrating the artists in this exhibition, whose work continues to challenge and provoke. In these times when it feels like the whole world is standing on a precipice, the artists in "Reality Check" provide a bigger picture and an encouragement to take a leap.

See you at the opening!

LAST WEEK TO SEE VICTOR GASTELUM'S "XACTO MUNDO"

Funny how capitalism crashing on a global scale can take our attention away from things that truly matter in life--like art, for example. So, here we are to remind you that there is only one week left to turn off your TV and stop by OVERTONES to see some really great art: VICTOR GASTELUM's solo exhibition "Xacto Mundo"
Victor's exhibit is on view through October 25th with gallery hours Wednesday through Saturday 12-6pm. As usual, you are always welcome to call us if you'd rather make an appointment for an alternative time and we'll do our best to make it happen for you--and for us.
And while we have your attention: save the date for our next opening: Saturday, November 1st, 7-10pm. "Reality Check," our upcoming group exhibition, will be a rocking good time with some of the greatest political artists America has to offer. We trust you are all registered and ready to vote, so that Saturday night will be an opportunity to gather with friends and get ready for change!

In the meantime, catch Victor's art while you still can.

See you at the gallery.

ROBBIE CONAL: NO SPITTING NO KIDDING SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18

Join us this Saturday, October 18th from 6-9pm for the greatest art opening in town: ROBBIE CONAL'S "No Spitting No Kidding"--a survey of 25 years of Robbie's paintings and drawings, all hanging (for dear life) in one place: the fantastic Track 16 Gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica.

There would not have been OVERTONES without the spitting, kidding and unflinching support from Robbie, nor would have our journey so far been quite so much fun without him bringing in fried chicken during installations, and mixed CDs with lots of twang for literally every opening we've ever had! So, we'll be at Track 16 this Saturday to celebrate Robbie and WITH Robbie, acknowledge how old he is, and say "Thanks for ...... !!". Even the Mama of Overtones flew in from Belgrade for the occasion so it's going to be crowded (she's got a lot of fans)--get there early and ready to have a good time!
Click here to hear some of the reasons why we love Robbie so much.
For the rest of the "reasons why we love Robbie"....well, you'll have to come and see for yourself (together with very special musical guests!) this Saturday Night!!

And, since you'll already be heading West, you might as well do yourself--and us!--a favor and come in to see VICTOR GASTELUM's, exhibition at OVERTONES (recommended by Robbie, no kidding and many times over)--only a couple of weeks left for Victor's "Xacto Mundo" so get your move on!

PEACE and GOBAMA!

VICTOR GASTELUM & CALEXICO

As so many of Victor Gastelum's fans already know, his relationship with the Tucson-based band CALEXICO has been a long and fruitful one. Victor's solo exhibition "Xacto Mundo" features some of the imagery seen on Calexico's brand new album "Carried To Dust". On September 30th the Calexico nice guys were guests on our favorite music show Morning Becomes Eclectic: to hear it, go here, to catch Calexico live (highly recommended!) go here, and to see the art in person, come to OVERTONES during the month of October: Victor Gastelum's exhibit is on view through October 25th--it's good for the soul and a sweet thing to do before you go and vote with--and for--HOPE! Last week for "Beauty & The Beast"

Before Summer 2008--and climbing gas prices--slow down LaLaLand, we hope you'll take this last opportunity to see "Beauty & The Beast":a group exhibition which celebrates 5 years of OVERTONES and showcases 14 artists: CRAIG BUTLER, CHRISTOPHER CHINN, SUE COE, ROBBIE CONAL, VICTOR GASTELUM, SIMONE LOURENCO, CLAYTON MURDACH, STAS ORLOVSKI, AMY ROSS, MARGI SCHARFF, CAROLE SILVERSTEIN, NANCY SPERO and ALEXIS WEIDIG.
The last day to see "Beauty & The Beast" is Saturday, August 2nd, from 12-6pm, and for some of the pieces in the show, it truly is the very last opportunity to see them in Los Angeles.
OVERTONES will be on summer hiatus for the rest of August though we will be available by appointment: you are always welcome to give us a buzz and swing by on your way to the beach!

We will resume full speed ahead in September with a solo exhibition by one of our favorites, VICTOR GASTELUM, so stay tuned for updates coming your way early in September and save Saturday, September 20th on your calendars for Victor's opening party.

Happy Summer & see you at the gallery!
